Advent Project: Ministering Far and Near
The Outreach Committee and Vestry are sponsoring an Advent Project this year to raise money for two very important outreach ministries in the church. For this project we are reaching out into the world as well as supporting local needs. The first is to partner with Church of the Epiphany as they work to help raise funds to build a preschool in one of the refugee housing camps in Baghdad, in the Diocese of Qatar. In addition to providing much needed education to the children, this preschool will also provide employment in two ways: teachers will be recruited from among the residents of the camp, and mothers of students will be able to find jobs outside the camp because their children are being cared for.
The second ministry is raising money for Episcopal Charities. As you may be aware, Episcopal Charities is the outreach arm of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and its mission is to equip parish-affiliated outreach programs to transform the lives of people in need within the diverse communities of our Diocese. Through grants and technical support, Episcopal Charities supports nearly 100 programs that transform lives and strengthen communities. Their programs include:
∙ Food pantries and community kitchens that address hunger in local towns and neighborhoods;
∙ Skills-building programs that help brighten the futures of the unemployed, recent immigrants, and ex-prisoners who are reentering society;
∙ Health and wellness programs that improve quality of life for senior citizens, the homebound, children with special needs, and recovering substance abusers
∙ Children’s arts, academic enrichment, and summer recreation offerings that broaden the horizons of thousands of young people annually.
Our Advent Project goal is $2,000 and the money raised will be divided between these two ministries. We look forward to a successful Advent Project but it’s only attainable with your help!
You can conribute by check with "Advent Appeal" in the memo line along with the regular Sunday offering or by mail to St. John's Church, 224 Waverly Place, New York, NY 10014. Envelopes designated for this Advent Appeal will also be available at the back of the church.
