About the
Wednesday Evening Healing Liturgies
The ministry of healing is as old as the people of God. From
the healing stories of Elisha and the Naaman in the Hebrew
Scriptures to the healing of the man at the pool of Siloam
in the New Testament, the church has understood the renewal
and restoration of life to be a function of God's redeeming
power. As modern science has opened more of the mystery of
God to the healing arts of medicine and psychiatry, the church
has grown in its understanding of how God heals. We now see
ourselves as working in tandem with medicine and psychiatry
as we believe that healing involves body, mind, and spirit.
If you attend our healing liturgy you will find a simple
rite with lots of silence and opportunity for prayer. Sometimes
people come early and visit the icons in the church, laying
before God the pain, hope, disappointments, and thanksgivings
of their lives. A service leaflet will guide you directly
through the liturgy. You will hear a meditation on some aspect
of healing and renconciliation, and, most significantly, you
may be anointed with holy oil. Anointing is an ancient sacrament
in which the power of God is turned and focused upon the particular
needs of God's people. A prayer will be said for you and hands
will be laid upon your head, reminding us of our need to be
touched by God and by each other. The liturgy concludes with
the celebration of the Eucharist, and if you are baptized,
you are welcome to receive holy communion in our Church.
You are invited to bring your prayers, your concerns, and
your need for healing to this liturgy. We hope you will join
us.
The liturgy is on Wednesday evenings at 6:15 p.m. and lasts
30 minutes.
