Christian
Formation 2007
The established
pattern of Christian Education has continued. On Wednesday
evenings, we have had about five class series
each year, ranging from history to theology and Bible,
to liturgy and spiritual formation. Normally, Father
Prator, Father Corney or an outside speaker has taught
these classes. Attendance has been good and steady and
the parish remains one of the few small parishes that
maintain adult education regularly through the year.
Father Corney’s afternoon Bible class on Thursdays
has exposed members of the parish (and sometime visitors
from outside) to rigorous academic study of scripture.
The annual Quiet Days in Advent and
in Lent continue to be very popular, perhaps the most
popular of all our programs. These miniature retreats
are offered under the leadership of an outside director,
often a member of a religious order. The proximity of
New York City to six religious orders for men and women
is key to our being able to undertake these programs.
Last year we did not have a parish retreat. Attendance
had been declining over the recent years and it seemed
uncertain that the retreat was meeting a need. We decided
this year to give it one more try, with more publicity
and with placement of the retreat at the Order
of the Holy Cross, which is a first-rate retreat
center in every way. The success of this year’s
retreat will be determinative for future plans.
