Ushers’
Committee Report
On a warm November Sunday, I stood at the back of the
church, trying to stay calm. It was 10:55 and no other
ushers were there. Okay, I could take collection on
both sides but how was I going to process to the altar
with two flagons of wine, the bread box of wafers, and
the alms basin – all in one hand, my guide dog
Xia’s harness handle in the other?
Of course, other members of the ushers’ committee
did come in and all was fine. This had never happened
before and hasn’t happened since.
But it underlined to me the need for more members of
our committee. The ushers are the nicest people imaginable.
We’re very easy to get along with. Please think
about joining us.
Last January, Gerry Martone and Kelli Taylor responded
to my please at this meeting. They are now valuable
members of the committee. They help when they are in
town. There are senior ushers who rotate as the usher
in charge for Sundays and weekday services significant
in the church calendar year. Others like Gerry and Kelli,
choose to make themselves available to assist by carrying
the food basket to the altar, taking collection, or
whatever is needed and they are comfortable doing.
Won’t you please think of ushering too? Speak
to me or any of the other ushers, or email me at dhd24@cornell.edu.
Respectfully submitted,
David H. DePorte, Head Usher
