Ushers’
Committee Report
I consider it a great privilege, as well as a true pleasure,
to chair the ushers’ committee. Our ushers represent
a cross-section of St. John’s: The committee includes
one of the wardens and several vestry members. Most
important: The ushers are, one and all, incredibly friendly,
warm, caring people.
The word “all” has unfortunately been less
applicable to the committee this year than in the past.
We share some members with the altar guild and some
members have taken on tasks in outreach. Others have
had health problems and family concerns. Our ranks have
temporarily diminished.
But on we move: There are always at least three ushers
on Sunday and at least two for Staints’ Days and
other special services. This year we were honored but
deeply saddened to usher at the funerals of two parishioners
who are greatly missed: Kingsley Ramsey-Ridley and Irene
Sherrock.
The ushers hand you a service leaflet as you enter,
answer newcomers’ questions, take collection,
carry the alms and elements to the altar in a procession
before Communion, and count the collection after each
service. Our work is involved but it’s gratifying
and never difficult, as a senior usher is assigned to
every service.
Sammy Chin was the last new person to join us and now
he and Fred Harrity have moved to Orlando – surely
a good place to be in this sort of weather. Please consider
becoming an usher.
If you’d like to try, please speak to me after
this meeting or e-mail me at dhd24@cornell.edu. You
can also speak to Father Prator or to any of the other
ushers at another time.
Truly, we’d love to have you join us.
Respectfully submitted,
David H. DePorte, Head Usher
