The English Reformation

Wednesday Evenings at 7:00

in the Parish Hall

February 28, March 7 & 14, 2007

The English Reformation can be looked at from several perspectives. Professor Farwell is a professor of liturgy and so his perspective is that of the Church’s worship. The formation of the Book of Common Prayer reflects the movement of the English Church from medieval Catholicism, to radical Protestantism, to Roman Catholicism, and finally to the Elizabethan settlement, the compromise which places us between the traditions of Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. That compromise, along with the absence of central authority is a hallmark of Anglicanism and a source of much of its contemporary conflict.

Leader: The Rev’d James W. Farwell
Father Farwell is Associate Professor in the H. Boone Chair of Liturgics at General Theological Seminary. He received his B.A., from Catholic University of America, M.Div., from The General Theological Seminary and Ph.D., from Emory University. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and churches throughout the United States. Professor Farwell is the author of several recent publications on various liturgical topics.
