St. John’s Celebrates

Gay Pride Month

June, 2010

June is the traditional Gay Pride month in New York City, and actually, around the world. The date commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising that happened right in our neighborhood in 1969. Our parish has long been open to gay and lesbian Christians, and has stood as a beacon for civil rights for all men and women for generations. During the week before Gay Pride Sunday, which is June 27, we will welcome Bishop Catherine Roskam to our parish for an educational event about Gay Pride. It has been several years since we organized a gay pride event, and this will be a good one.

The exact date has yet to be firmed up but when she is here, Bishop Roskam will speak about the church’s stand on rights for gays and lesbians, the issue of gay ordination, the possibility of rites to celebrate gay and lesbian partnerships, the church’s stand on gay marriage, and what St. John’s can do to make a difference. She will also address ways in which we need to change our theological thinking in order to be more effective and more faithful to the gospel of Christ.

The event may be in the form of a major educational address, a Eucharist or Evensong, and the opportunity to witness to the rest of the Church on these issues. Watch for dates, times and descriptions to follow.
