The Reverend
Lloyd E. Prator is a native of San Francisco, where he served
as rector of All Saints' Church and as chaplain and executive
assistant to the Bishop of California following his ordination
to the priesthood in 1975. He graduated with honors from the
Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and
from Stanford University with a degree in political science
specializing in constitutional law. He worked in political
campaigns for several years and then served as a line officer
in the United States Air Force, stationed in Alaska, Tennessee
and Texas. He was twice awarded the Air Force Commendation
Medal.
Father Prator has taught liturgy at the General Theological
Seminary, as an adjunct professor specializing in the pastoral
dimension of liturgy and public worship. He has supervised
seminary students for over 25 years, and is a member of the
Association of Anglican Musicians and Associated Parishes
for Liturgy and Mission.
In the community, Father Prator has served on the
Institutional Review Board for experimental medical treatments
at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, as a founding board
member of the California Counseling Center and board member
of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute in Manhattan.
He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haight Ashbury
Alcoholism Services in San Francisco and served on the board
of the People With AIDS coalition in New York.
ABC Television and Beliefnet, the internet magazine
on religion, spirituality and values, tapped Father Prator
to lead discussion on Christology following the Peter Jennings
special on Jesus in 1997, and Beliefnet has published a number
of his articles on theology, religious practice and ethics.
At the time of the tragic terrorist attack on New
York City, Father Prator's articles were published on Beliefnet
and in From the Ashes, a spiritual reflection on the events
of 11 September 2001. He has given interviews to CBS News,
the New York Times, and the BBC, and has continued to provide
input to various media on issues in the passing cultural political
and religious scene.
When not occupied with the pastoral duties of being
rector of St. John's Church, in Greenwich Village, where he
has served for over 15 years, Father Prator enjoys travel,
and reading in politics and economics. He is currently engaged
in a project on the religious assumptions and spiritual values
in the films of Alfred Hitchcock. He appreciates architecture
and design and is something of an authority on California
silver.
