Farewell Eucharist and Reception for Father Gary Hellman

A Message from Fr Gary Hellman

It is with deep appreciation and a full heart, I write to share that I will be concluding my in person counseling practice at St. John’s, based in Wade House, as of August 31, 2025.

Nearly five decades ago, in 1976, I arrived at St. John’s as a young priest in pastoral counseling training. With the support of Father John Cannon and the Vestry, we established a Counseling Center and launched a weekly Healing Eucharist that has continued ever since. The years that followed brought extraordinary challenges—the AIDS crisis, 9/11, and most recently, the COVID pandemic. Through it all, the church community has been a sustaining presence of compassion and strength. I have been honored to serve as a counselor, teacher, and director, aware of so many counseling sessions of care delivered through the decades by dedicated clinicians at St. John’s and throughout the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute.

The support of this congregation helped give form to a model of spiritually integrated psychotherapy that continues to offer healing to many.

I now live in Washington, DC and will continue offering therapy online, through PSI. I can be reached at Dr. Gary Hellman, 917 880 9813 and ghellman@minspirit.org, 4025 Connecticut Ave NW, Apt 602, Washington DC 20008. I carry with me a profound sense of gratitude for the welcome, wisdom, and shared ministry that St. John’s has offered me over these many years.

With blessings and abiding thanks, The Rev. Dr. Gary Hellman, Ph.D.
